ALTERATION / REPOWERING

Yacht alterations, repowering and survey support

Replacing an engine, changing the hull structure or adding major equipment? Compare the existing documents with the proposed change first. Confirm whether written permission, plans, tests, inspection or licence updates are needed before the yard starts work. VOY coordinates the owner, appropriate professionals and contractor so the technical and works actions stay clear.

Checks before work begins

Collect the current licence, certificates, original plans, equipment information and condition photos. List the old and new engine or equipment model, power, weight, location, related systems and proposed method of installation. Marine Department form MD 511 sets out a prior written-permission process for alterations involving the hull, structure or installed engine. A vessel that does not need to carry a Certificate of Survey or Inspection should not be assumed exempt from that process. The application route and any plans, calculations and inspection required must be confirmed for the individual vessel.

How VOY follows the project through

  1. 01

    Clarify the proposal

Liaise with the appropriate professional and list the applications, technical documents, tests and inspections to be confirmed.

  2. 02

    Coordinate the yard

Once applicable permission is obtained, share the agreed proposal, works milestones and supplier information, and track the yard’s responses to professional comments.

  3. 03

    Record changes

If the specification changes during the works, record the difference and ask the authorised professional whether it affects the approved proposal. VOY does not approve changes itself.

  4. 04

    Handover and reinspection

Coordinate applicable tests, inspections, rectification checks and document updates, then record completed and outstanding items.

Agreed deliverables may include: a comparison of the old and new proposals, technical and application action list, yard and supplier milestones, variation and test records, and a document handover list. Design, calculations, plan approval, professional certification and construction work are carried out under separate arrangements by people with the appropriate qualifications, authority or capability.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do not rely on “the same model” alone. Confirm the actual model, specifications, installation and registered particulars, and check prior written permission and follow-up documents under the applicable process.

Gather the completed works, old and new equipment details and contractor records. An appropriate professional can assess outstanding permission, testing, survey and document updates. VOY cannot guarantee retrospective acceptance.
