PRE-PURCHASE / CONDITION

Pre-purchase yacht surveys and condition checks

Before buying or selling a Class IV yacht, understand its condition and unresolved issues within an agreed scope. VOY can coordinate a suitable independent survey professional, the owner’s permission to board, sea-trial or haul-out dates, and report handover, so the client has the relevant information before signing or completing the transaction.

Define who the report is for

Buyers, sellers, insurers and lenders may ask for different reports. Before engaging a surveyor, confirm the client and report recipient, intended use, the survey professional and whether the recipient accepts their qualifications and format. A pre-purchase condition check informs a transaction; it does not automatically count as a statutory survey, an insurance report or the Marine Department’s change-of-ownership procedure. Formal transfer has separate documents and conditions.

Agree the inspection scope first

A basic scope may cover safely accessible hull, deck, machinery space, main systems and available documents. Sea trials, haul-out or lifting, engine diagnostics, oil analysis, dismantling and other specialist tests depend on vessel availability, site permission and a separate quotation. Inaccessible, obscured or unopened areas should be noted as limitations in the report. No inspection can guarantee that every hidden defect will be found.

What VOY can coordinate and deliver

We can liaise with the buyer, seller, captain, yard and survey professional to confirm boarding and sea-trial conditions, inspection dates and available maintenance records, and then follow report handover and items requiring further investigation. If VOY is also involved in the sale or may undertake later repairs, we will explain our role first. The appointed survey professional independently assesses the condition and writes the report within the agreed scope.

Agreed deliverables may include: written confirmation of the inspection scope and limitations, site arrangements, the survey professional’s report and explanation arrangements, and a list of points needing further investigation. Valuation, repair-cost estimates, transaction legal advice and insurance underwriting decisions are not included by default.

What to provide, fees and FAQs

Please provide the yacht type, age, main dimensions, marina, expected transaction or handover date, intended report use, and whether a sea trial and haul-out can be arranged. VOY coordination, the survey professional, yard lifting or berth, sea-trial fuel, specialist tests and travel are quoted separately for the agreed conditions.
